This is based on the NCFE awarding body but will be applicable to other awarding bodies.
Functional Skills English Reading Entry 3 Module- 26 slide PPT. REFORM
This is a 26 page PowerPoint that can be used in the delivery of Functional Skills Reading Entry Level 3. This PPT includes everything learners need to know in order to pass their reading assessment (it is based on the NCFE awarding body criteria).
The PPT gives learners an overview of the following:
Overview of the reading assessment
Skimming & Scanning - Step by step techniques and task worksheet
Purpose of a Text- Different purposes of a text - the different purposes that you need to know for your exam, a class matching quiz and a practice exam question
Finding the meaning of words - A dictionary task and step by step guide on how to answer this question. This is followed by a task.
A skimming and scanning question worksheet, plus answers, is provide. Questions and answers are also provided throughout the PPT.

E3 Functional Skills English 24X Irregular Plurals Flash Cards - Writing Exam
24X Irregular Plural Flash Cards - double sided with polka dot print on one side.
These are flash cards which are useful to use with Entry Level 3 learners.
In the exam, learners are expected to write the plural form of a word. They will be expected to know a list of common plural nouns that don’t follow the usual spelling conventions.
Each singular noun and its irregular plural form is on one of the 24 cards.
You could add an extension activity and turn this into a matching game ( match the noun to the plural form). Learners could also create a sentence which includes each word.
Figurative Language Devices: Functional Skills English L1 & L2. 25 page PPT Lesson and Tasks
This is a 25 page PPT on figurative language devices. A task sheet is also attached.

Two revision guides - one catered for NCFE and one catered for City and Guilds.
Both are 6/7 page revision guides that helps learners to understand what to expect in their reading assessment. They also gives advice and examples of how to answer the questions on the exam paper.

Twilight English Reading Comprehension Skimming & Scanning Activity & Answers. Functional Skills
An English Reading Comprehension Skimming & Scanning Activity.
This would be ideal for E3 Functional Skills learners and pupils in the KS3 & KS4 age groups.
The learner will read part of Twilight’s Chapter 1. They will then answer 10 questions based on this extract. There is an extension task and the learner is asked to identify any adjectives in a piece of text.
Answers are provided so that learners can self mark.
E3 Functional Skills English 24X Phonics Flash Cards - Spelling / Reading Common Words
24X Phonic Flash Cards - double sided with circle print on one side.
These are flash cards which are useful to use with Entry Level 3 learners.
In the exam, learners are expected to both read and spell certain words correctly. The NCFE created a list of common words that are often mis-spelt and which E3 learners need to learn to prepare for their spelling test.
Each card has the phonics sound symbol on the card with an example of a word containing that sound underneath. The letters underlined within these words correspond to the sound symbol and these letters need special attention for spelling.
You could add an extension activity and get the learner to create a sentence which includes each word.
